Naming the beasts

  • Oct. 31st, 2009 at 12:24 AM

I'm always curious how writers come up with the non-terrestrial names they do for animals, and other sentients they invent, or for their made up magical creatures. Sure there are tens of thousands of magical creatures already and enough variations on them from region to region that the need for something new isn't great, but still exists. James Enge pointed out this amusing collection of proposed collective terms for a list of critters we're all familiar with. Personally while I like the list, I think a few of them are a touch off. For instance I like Mr Enge's a guile of dragons, and my feast of vampires a touch better.

Enjoy, and post your improvements or additions.

Anyone spotted?

  • Oct. 9th, 2009 at 12:04 AM

Y'all know that both Dave Freer's Dragon's Ring and Jame Enge's  This Crooked Way are on shelves for your enjoyment? Has anyone spotted them yet?

This, that and the other thing

  • Sep. 24th, 2009 at 10:27 PM

James Enge mentioned two cons he was planning on for next year. One was one of my favorite haunts in the Mid Atlantic states, the other was one of those cons nearly everyone goes to at least once. As I mentioned on Facebook, James and I have both gotten our copies of This Crooked Way and it is damned spiffy and I like it much. Others are talking about The Blood Of Ambrose, and James has done a little himself, he's going to be on an upcoming podcast by Two Sci Fi Guys who interviewed Dave Freer recently. (Damn they have great taste.)

Oh yeah, this greeted me when I got home.

The Essential Why?

The Essential Why?

People ask; What does it take to get published? It takes a number of things. One is certainly, luck. It is almost certainly the smallest factor, but present. Finishing a novel is another, and by finishing I don’t mean simply writing until you toss in “the end”, but polishing the delivery, making vocabularies internally consistent and appropriately varied, making sure that rooms, cars and hair don’t change colors, brands or sizes from one chapter to the next and of course that you’ve spelled your each characters name the same way throughout the novel. There is of course the minor step of circulating a novel, of which any number of writers and agents have talked about before. But before each of those, and more importantly than any is why.

Reviews, and Contest

  • Apr. 23rd, 2009 at 5:07 PM

I love review of books, especially my clients books. And of course reviews of my clients books where the reviewer clearly loves my clients work, well that's almost as good as selling the book was in the first place.

So I'm going to do a contest that may be continued for other books but will give unpaid reviewers a chance to win free books. Who knows, maybe some day I'll even have a spiffy graphic to go with it.

So what inspired this contest? Well, a wonderful review on KingoftheNerds. It's a real readers review, it feels genuine, and get's exactly what's right about the book. Here is a highlight of the review;

"...Enge's clever writing really came to the fore as the novel moved on and turned it into something that was truly fantastic (::groan::). It's old school and new school, dark without ever being oppressive and yet somehow managed to keep an almost constant smile on my face. It's one of those novel that leaves you a bit crestfallen that it's over, not because the ending was disappointing (it wasn't!) but because you have to stop living in the world it crafted. The second book The Crooked Way looks like it'll be out in October and I for one can't wait to read more."

Great review, full of spoilers though so be careful.

Now, back to that contest.

I've decided to call it the Lunchpail Review Contest.
To enter:

  • Write a review of The Blood of Ambrose somewhere online
  • email the review, a link to it, and your contact info to: lunchpail@onyxhawke.com
  • Entries must be received by 7pm ET May 21st 2009
I will post links to each of the reviews here on my LJ between May 22 and May 30th (possibly sooner depending on the number of reviews) and will after each review has been up at least one day post a poll for three days allowing readers to vote on the reviews.

The winner will receive a copy of This Crooked Way.

Interview w/James Enge

  • Apr. 15th, 2009 at 11:01 AM

The masterful James Enge was interviewed by the incomparable Sara M. Harvey for SFScope. You can see the interview here, and keep up with both of their exploits: [info]jamesenge & [info]saraphina_marie  assuming of course that you aren't already reading both of them.

It seems like I can't go a single day without someone emailing me a link to something new on

James Enge's The Blood of Ambrose. Today is no different. I got a link to an interview on Tor.com with James.  Enjoy.

I'm told both Amazon & B&N have Blood of Ambrose in stock. I'm also told that the delivery gremlins are not horsing around in delivering author & contributor copies.
What you read was the blatant reminder to preorder if you haven't, the subtle one is below the cut. )

Ambrose Cover!

Finally! I saw the preview I wasn't allowed to share, and now, there is this cover final and one for all to look at. I tried to get a larger image into the post, but apparently Picsa, myself, and LiveJournal aren't a good mix.

Here's the Picsa link. And I'm sure you've all preordered already so I won't point out that large preorders make editors happy, and being happy makes them much more pliable when I twist their arms for additional books and better terms.
